Why is it that Hollywood has a need to remake GOOD movies into BAD ones, but never turns BAD ones into GOOD versions? In this, the classic and lovable Dudley Moore role of “Arthur” is performed by British-funny-man, Russell Brand. Hobson (Helen Mirren) has been his nanny and caretaker since the day his father died and his mother walked out. As the movie opens, and much like the original, Arthur is a spoiled, disrespectful billionaire so there’s not much reason to like his character. His days are full of game playing and his nights are full of parties and girls. Hobson runs interference with the police, the tabloids and whomever else to keep Arthur’s already reputation intact. But when his long lost mother – who runs Bach Worldwide – tells him he must take a wife, she decides it must be gold-digging-corporate-ladder-climber Susan Johnson (Jennifer Garner.) Garner, btw, is hilarious in her come-hither-kitty role. But alas, like the original, Arthur falls for the real girl. In this, that memorable Liza Minnelli role of Naomi is played by Greta Gerwig. At this point, and due to an adorable Pez Candy scene in Grand Central Station, the movie takes a slight turn upwards. And from there just takes us on a predictable and even romp to the sentimental end. Not bad, but far from good, and only worthy of two tiaras
