Once Upon a Time, there was a historical mansion, where in 1894, the crazy daughter of an aristocrat was locked in the basement, and later died. Since her voyage to the afterlife, she’s been spinning all types of havoc. Now ghosts have taken over Manhattan.
Enter Kristen Wigg, as Erin Gilbert, a Professor of Physics, close to her tenure, yet haunted (as it were) by a self-published book she penned on paranormal activity. Apparently it was co-written with Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) who has seen the book as a way to seed-fund her experiments at a second-rate Institute of Science (spelled with a ‘y’ – Scyence). McCarthy works in a mad laboratory, with Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) as her wacky sidekick. Throw in Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) subway security woman who has encountered strange spirits, and you’ve got four Ghostbusters!
But they’ll need an office. And they’ll need a receptionist…Kevin. Chris Hemmsworth. With his dumb blonde Ken doll/Clark Kent looks, he does an entertaining job at his well, entertaining job.
But what would be Ghostbusters without the original crew? Bill Murray appears as Dr Martin Heist (a skeptic) and then there’s Dan Ackroyd as a taxi driver. A little bit of nostalgia, a fair dose of comedy, non-stop energy and a feasible plot, makes for safe summer silliness with a lot of boo factor. 2 ½ tiaras.
