While most real housewives of New York are authors, interior designers or financing charities, Imogene, (Kristin Wig) is losing her job, being broken up with by her boyfriend, and institutionalized after a series of mistakes. No this isn’t Bridesmaid, but she’s the same pathetic character.
Imogene’s childhood of should have, would have, girl most likely – thus our title – finds herself living home with her mother (Annette Bening) and her grown brother, whose a few fries short a Happy Meal, running a critter business called Crabville. Imogene’s mother also has a low life, boyfriend named George Bouche (played by Matt Dillion) who’s a delusional liar, a Samurai and on a special CIA taskforce. Translation: He’s unemployed and banging Annette Bening. Imogene turns out to be pretty sane in an insane family.
The good news is her mother has been renting her childhood bedroom out to a hot younger guy named Lee, played by Glee’s Darren Criss, a Backstreet Boys wanna be. But maybe that’s exactly what Imogene needs. The film at times isn’t as certain about it’s footing as some comedies, but offers a fairly balanced dose of quirky and heartfelt. And laugh-out-loud screwball comedy.♕ ♚ ♛ 1/2
