Whatever you expect from this movie, let me confirm, it will be wayyyyyyy better! John Travolta steps into the man-dressed-as-a-woman role of Edna Turnblad, mother to Tracy (introducing Nikki Blonsky) a heavy-set girl desperate to win her shot at the Corny Collins show (think “American Idol.”) With the help of her best friend, (Amanda Bynes) the two concoct a scheme to miss school, try-out and win the semi-finals. Now she’ll just have to escape the evil prejudice clutches of Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer) protective of her White Bread daughter, Amber (Brittany Snow) the perfectly, obnoxious, prom queen. While many Broadway musicals have turned movie, this is the best to date. Travolta hasn’t sung since 1978 for “Grease” even though he turned down the “Chicago” role that later landed Richard Gere an Oscar nomination. Queen Latifah adds her singing skills and even Christopher Walken (as Tracy’s dad) does a couple duets, but it’s Blonsky in the lead role – after being discovered in a real life Cold Stone Creamery on Long Island – who steals the movie. Can you say ‘this is “Dreamgirls” Jennifer Hudson all over again?” Four tiaras
