Here Comes the Boom – Biology teacher Mr. Voss (Kevin James) was Teacher of the Year. But that was ten years ago. Since then he’s lost interest in his students but fascinated by the passion that the music teacher, Marty Streb (Henry Winkler) shows to his class. Afterall, “Music takes us where words can not.” But music is considered extra-curricular so since the booster club finances 1/3 of the schools budget, Mr. Streb’s class has to be the one to go.
That’s when Mr. Voss decides he can put his high school wrestling skills to the test and become a mixed-martial-arts fighter in order to raise funds for the cash-strapped school. Except…he doesn’t intend to win the fights, he intends to lose them. Apparently losing them still pays. So
he’ll need to lose forty-thousand worth!
He’s also losing at winning over the hot School Nurse, Miss Flores (Salma Hayek) who is undoubtedly the original Sofia Vergara (Modern
Family) who warms to Mr. Voss as Mr. Voss begins to believe in himself.
This film isn’t meant to be anything more than what it is….laugh-out-loud feel good popcorn entertainment and that’s probably because
it’s produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison productions. Sandler’s films always manage a message of the underdog star trying to do a good thing, learning lessons along the way but always in the realm of family values and the care of local community. Sounds very New England sensibilities to me, and that’s probably because most of Sandler’s films are shot in the Boston area since he helms from Manchester, New Hampshire. My only question which forces the film to lose one tiara…with the residuals earned from his “Happy Days” couldn’t “The Fonz” get his teeth fixed? Three tiaras
