Officer Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) was born in the back of her father’s squad car. Growing up she always wanted to be the police officer that daddy was. So far however, she’s been a joke of the precinct, until Vicente Cortez (Joaquin Cosio) is arrested in Dallas for dominating drug trades and 100 murders. Cooper must escort Daniella Reeva (Sophia Vergara) the wife of the one man who will have to testify against Cortez before they go into witness protection.
But the plan goes all wrong. There’s a shootout and the two women have to team up and run for their lives. Next thing they know they’re on the road “Thelma & Louise” style. Or at least in their dreams. Vergara can’t seem to stretch beyond her cranky accented roles – she’s “Modern Family” this time on a road trip. Witherspoon – portraying annoying and hyper – lessens her worth as an Oscar-winning actress. Girlfriend comedy is not her thing. She feels strained despite softening into her performance about halfway through when she poses as Justin Bieber. Don’t ask. She’s fine with romance and certainly drama, but this was a role better suited for Melissa McCarthy. ♚ ♛
