Finally! This is a movie for young women that inspires and empowers them to grow up and be the best they can be. Minus any boy crushes, this movie focuses on strength, family ties, values, sacrifice and friendships, in the story of a little girl, Kit Kittredge (Abigail Breslin) whose father (Chris O’Donnell) has just lost his job due to the Great Depression. When Kit’s mother has no option but to rent Kit’s bedroom out to boarders, Kit moves to the attic where she types her would-be stories on a dusty typewriter that she hopes to someday print in the local newspaper. The family’s revolving door includes Stanley Tucci, Joan Cusack, and “30 Rock’s” Jane Krakowski coming and going. The movie takes us back to a time when kids were encourage to respect their elders, go outside and play in the fresh air – so mom could keep the house clean for more than ten minutes. This is the summer’s darling and it gets four tiaras for being a little girls ‘Sex and the city” minus the sex and minus the city. Carrie and the girls could have learned a thing or two from these American dolls.
