It’s 1998 and Tom (Patrick Dempsey) is the ultimate college playboy who accidentally falls into the bed of Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) when she’s supposed to play “Monica” to his “Bill Clinton.” Alas she doesn’t fall for it, and he falls out of bed, but she falls for eventually being his best friend. Fast forward ten years later and Tom hasn’t changed much. But he lives by his code of honor – no dates with the same girl two nights in a row, no calling her within 24 hours of meeting her, and the list goes on. And since the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, it stands to reason that Tom’s dad (Sydney Pollack) is on his 5th (or is it 6th ?) wife. He’s even negotiating his pre-nup to the bride on the way to the church! Yes, Tom has the perfect world with a different woman every night and the same best friend every day. But when Tom realizes he may feel more for Hannah – especially after she’s gone on a long business trip to Scotland – is his timing all wrong to finally let her know how he feels? A Scottish influence adds a different twist to what may seem like a typical retread of wedding movies usually starring Julia Roberts or Cameron Diaz. But I say move over “My Best Friend’s Wedding” because these two characters are vulnerable, adorable and will make you tear up at the right moments. And they certainly have a lot more going for them then just another Matt McConnaughey/Kate Hudson rom com of the past two years. A real chemistry and a real special little chick flick or date night movie. Three and a half tiaras.
