Man Of The Year – Robin Williams seems to be making a slight comeback following this year’s family driven “R.V.”. But in this latest role as Tom Dobbs, don’t expect his antic-driven “Mrs. Doubtfire” performance that’s made him so famous. Sure this is energy-driven-Williams-silliness, but its Williams that’s funny, not the movie. The movie is actually quite serious. And so one has to wonder what writer/director Barry Levinson was thinking? Who’s his target audience in this “Wag the Dog”-esque story? Tom Dobbs is a stand-up comedian who listens to his audience and decides to run for President. Christopher Walken is his business manager turned campaign manager. Laura Linney is a computer geek who works at the company that designed the voting system run amuck. Will the audience find him believable? He can raise issues, but can he run a country? Will the guilt of knowing that maybe he didn’t win after all, change his comic tune? This is what this movie is about. The politics of politics. He represents the People’s Party not a Democratic or Republican Party, because America lives in a society, after all, where we trust David Letterman to deliver our news instead of the morning newspaper.
