In what is being helmed the “movie of the year,” for most, the main attraction of director Milos Forman’s gentlest of movies is Jim Carrey as a serious actor. He portrays the legendary comic Andy Kaufman who went from the “foreign man” to Latke Gravas of “Taxi.” Carrey manages to capture the serious, sometimes funny, moments in an almost spooky portrayal of the deceased Kaufman, who died of lung cancer in 1984. While we never learn about Kaufman from the inside, Carrey captures Kaufman’s charades and head games to perfection.
Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski who also scripted Forman’s “The People vs. Larry Flynt.” They also rejoin with Courtney Love, this time as Lunne Margulies, Kaufman’s relatively normal girlfriend.
