Charlie Baileygates (Jim Carrey), is a 17 year veteran of the Rhode Island police force. Charlie is a mild-mannered, hard working, always kind and devoted father to his three black rapper sons (I won’t ruin why). Unfortunately, Charlie has Split Personality Disorder, and when he runs out of his medication…. Hank emerges, Charlie’s troubled alter-ego and from that moment on, it’s no more Mr. Nice Guy. He’s an arrogant, drunken, ass-kicking, loves dirty sex kind of guy that surfaces after the town thinks he’s a wimp for the last time. From the creators of “There’s Something About Mary”, brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly re-team for the first time since “Dumb and Dumber” with Jim Carrey. And, I can promise you they’ve upped the anti making last year’s famous “hair gel scene” look tamed. You’ll think differently about french kissing, breast feeding, vagisal crème, dog mess on the lawn, bugs on a windshield, dead cows on highways, the purpose of a chicken and cotton mouth, to name just a few of this year’s push-the-limit gags. Renee Zellweger plays the girl who had a traffic violation gone wrong, somehow ending up in some crazy, far-fetched deadly escape with Carrey. I’m not sure exactly what they are running from or why all is forgiven in the end, but the Farrelly brothers draw their hook off likable underdog characters and it works. Much of the time. Not my favorite of their flicks, but destined to draw last year’s “Mary” audience. Many cameo appearances by Boston locals including Steve Sweeney as the newspaper stealing neighbor. Chris Cooper (American Beauty) and Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) also star.
