The movie with a bad name is expected to be a bad film… And it is. Apparently Sicario means many things, but in Mexico, Sicario means ‘hitman.’ Kate (Emily Blunt) is an FBI agent who seems happy with her job, until the department’s Matt (Josh Brolin) says that their expanding to Mexico for escalating cartel activity. She’ll be sent to join Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) to find the brother of the ring leader of a drug cartel.
Upon arrival, and for the first hour of the film, we get a frightened-mouse Blunt, who stares around at all the wrong doings, including bodies strung from trees to create fear. It’s clear she doesn’t want to be there, so why is she?
Donald Trump, btw, would be very happy….the new answer to immigrants is to show up at the border and gun them down.
But we keep waiting for answers, waiting for dialog, that never comes. The best and only real line in the first hour is “Finding the Lord in the tunnels is like finding a vaccine.” We already knew that. Poorly written, lamely acted, the movie never quite gets moving until the end. By then, we aren’t interested.
