Ben Randall (Kevin Costner) is a coast guard that’s too busy saving lives to save his marriage to his wife (Sela Ward). But when Randall fails to save his Coast Guard partner, he’s two times wounded, and decides to teach a class of recent enlisted hopefuls, as a means of soul-searching his guilt. Enter Jake Fischer (Ashton Kutcher) an eager guy with a history as a high school swim-team star, who manages to piss Randall off for no apparent reason, other than Randall sees a lot of himself in Fischer’s character (think “Officer And A Gentleman.”) We’ve seen this performance before with Costner – “The Bodyguard” – big hero gone wrong trying to work out his personal kinks. This film like a coast guard – gives us its all – energy, work and passion – but unlike a real life rescue, gets lost in about a 20-minute-too-long-ending. In that amount of time, had we been lost at sea, we’d have surely drowned. Three crowns
