The Savages – Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a Professor -a single, selfish man whose life revolves around a book he’s writing on a playwright Bertolt Brecht (Bertolt who? You get my point.) His sister (Laura Linney) gets by on temp jobs in New York City in hopes of one day getting a grant to write her auto-biographical play. Neither was loved by parents who essentially left them as orphans. Now the tables are turned when their father ((Philip Bosco) is in need of care in his final years. Can these two siblings give him the love he could never give them? This movie is simple but engaging, bitterly funny and surprisingly poignant, in an honest look at what it is to finally be alone when your parents die. It also brilliantly examines what happens to the childish feelings one contains that come into conflict with the bigger, darker grown-up feelings that lie beneath them. Four tiaras
