(Rated PG)
It may be Fox Animations first computer generated film but it just doesn’t hit home the way their Bluth/Goldman’s “American Tale,” about the little mouse, did years ago. However, that was exactly Fox’s intention. The first sci-fi adventure destined to sell little-big boys leaving little girls who prefer soft and fuzzy cartoons (think “Anastasia”) in the dust. This “Star Wars” type flick is combo computer-generated and cell animation on a journey that takes place fifteen years after the world has been destroyed by a devastating alien attack. The action turns on the character Cale (Matt Damon), a rebellious teenager whose mission is to find the Titan, a legendary spacecraft which holds the secret to salvation with mankind, (see already I’ve lost anybody with pigtails dressed in Gap kid.) With the deadly Drej aliens close behind and betrayal from within, Cale teams up with the ship’s captain, Joe Korso (Bill Pullman); his crew of renegade aliens; and a beautiful pilot named Akima (Drew Barrymore) to become a new kind of hero. Thank god for Nathan Lane and John Leguizamo who provide some comic relief. Great for the 13-14 year old boy market with its dark comic book appeal combining fast moving motion and sound, like a theme park ride at Disney. And speaking of Disney; the same people who should only be doing animation since they combine it with — heart!
