– “1,000 years ago ‘The Fraternity’ formed a group of assassins.” Six weeks ago, a nobody, Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), just an ordinary guy in a cubicle (think “The Office”) walks into a drug store and runs into Fox (Angelina Jolie). She points a gun at his head and declares that his father – the one that he thinks walked out on him as an infant – was assassinated, only yesterday. Either Wesley’s anxiety meds needs a refill, or maybe this has really happened. Next thing we know, this overly-polite nerd knows, he’s working for Sloan (Morgan Freeman) where he discovers that he has his own assassin abilities inherited from his father. The problem with this movie isn’t its big bang CGI effects, but it’s realistic site of blood that appears in gruesome, specific, close-ups. If bloody noses make you oozy, if the sound of a nose cracking when broken might make you squeamish, you may opt to avoid this one. That said, its twist-of-an-ending and Angelina’s goddess abilities to kick some butt – her motto: “kill one and save one thousand” – make it a highly entertaining summer romp. Three and a half tiaras
